What an AI chatbot is, and what it is not
The word covers two different things. The older kind is a scripted bot: a decision tree with canned replies, the sort that asks you to press 1 for billing. The kind on this page is a conversational model. It was trained on an enormous amount of text, so it predicts a fitting reply to whatever you write, remembers the conversation so far, and can be steered with instructions ("answer as a tax adviser", "keep it under 100 words").
Why the same question gets different answers from different chatbots
